Petition an die Kommission der EU                       zum Thema Demokratie

Dear co-signer of our petition to the EU: How do we defend our European democratic values?

In February 2023, we submitted a petition to the EU, which you supported. In this petition, we make a plea for the European Union to inventorize, targeted, coherent, systematic and long-lasting programs for education from 2 to 12 year in the EU.  Programs with a focus on structural and durable effects in education in democratic citizenship and the values, equality, freedom and solidarity. And also a focus on the whole team and school.

Specifically, we asked the EU to:

  1. An inventory of targeted, coherent, systematic and long-lasting programs for citizenship-education in the EU Member States.
  2. To organize an exchange between the countries of the EU and facilitate a network for durable exchange about these programs and about effective implementation strategies.
  3. To facilitate possibilities for those countries, who do not have such a program. We learned of the situation in Poland where The Peaceable School has now been translated into Polish and also adapted to the Polish situation. Schools in Poland do not have sufficient financial resources to pay for training and supervision. There will be more countries in the EU with few financial options.

We would like to inform you about the follow-up after the submission. Initially, the Education and Culture Committee asked whether the EU should comment the EU nations on the importance of a sustainable and systematic approach to citizenship education. After clarification on our part, a surprising  invitation from Sabine Verheyen (chairman of the committee) to give a short presentation on November 27 last week, at a 2-day meeting on European citizenship education. Present were EU parliamentarians, members of the Council of Europe, members of national parliaments, UNESCO, etc.

Following the presentation, several participants spoke out in Favor of a more extensive vision from the EU on good and sustainable citizenship education. Of course, there were also immediate dissenting voices: parents, not schools, are about education.

In any case, it look like there is a development in the direction we advocate. Unfortunately, we cannot yet help on a short time, the many requests from countries such as Georgia, Armenia, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, etc. who want to get started with finding, translating and adapting an existing sustainable and systematic citizenship program. The inventory will not take place in short-term. The same goes for the necessary financing for the work in translating and adapting of the people from the countries as listed above.

We remain committed to this and hope to see you often in the fight for democracy, freedom and inclusion!
